About us

Somali Non-State Actors Coalition (SONSAC) is a coalition and coordination mechanism of CSOs working in Somali Regional State. It provides a coordination platform and a common voice for the more than 25 national and regional non-governmental organizations (CSOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSO) working in secure but complex operating environment. Effective coordination has significantly facilitated the successful delivery of humanitarian and development aid in Somali Regional State. Established in 2019, SONSAC has since grown to become a platform for networking and coordination of CSOs to improve coordination and raise the CSOs' presence and profile within the civic coordination structures for Somali Regional State. SONSAC maintains its presence through its offices in Jigjiga, and expand into Dire Dawa and Gode as soon its circumstance permit subject to adequate fundraising. By the end of 2022, SONSAC had 25 members.

SONSAC’s mandate has evolved since the year 2019 when it was first set up. The amendments were necessitated by the changing operational context, member needs, the evolving realities in the implementation and coordination needs, as well as the need to position SONSAC more clearly within the civic structures for Somali Regional State. In the 2019-2021 strategic period, SONSAC made progress in a number of areas. SONSAC conducted training session for civic actors including traditional and religious leader, women and youth, private sector actors, political parties. More over SONSAC facilitated 3 civic-political dialogues on the current Ethiopian National Dialogue. At the moment SONSA has finalized its preparedness to engage with the Somali Region Parliament to ensure civic voices are aired and concerned are raised democratically.  Civil Society Organizations (CSO) around the world play a crucial strategic role promoting citizens’ participation and ensuring that electoral processes are free, fair, and credible. CSOs played pivotal in reducing election-related conflict dynamics by promoting a dialogue among traditional and religious leaders, youth and women, political parties and CSOs in Somali Region. In view of the ongoing democratic reform in Ethiopia, SONSAC recognized the need for forming a network of CSOs to support the peaceful democratic transition process, coordinate engagement in the upcoming election in 2021, and facilitate long-term CSO engagement in advocacy and civic participation in a sustainable and systematic way.
